First Home Deposit Subsidy

Housing New Zealand’s KiwiSaver HomeStart Grant replaces the KiwiSaver First Home Deposit Subsidy.

·         Support increased for building or buying a brand new home

Members building or buying a brand-new home (or the land on which a new home will be built) can receive a grant of $2,000 for each year of KiwiSaver membership, up to a maximum of 5 years.

·         Support kept at the same level for buying an existing home

Members buying an existing home can receive a grant of $1,000 for each year of KiwiSaver membership, up to a maximum of 5 years.

·         House price caps increased across NZ

  • Auckland - $550,000
  • Hamilton City, Tauranga City, Western Bay of Plenty, Kapiti Coast,

Porirua City, Upper Hutt, Hutt City, Wellington City, Nelson City,

Tasman, Waimakariri, Christchurch City, Selwyn District, Queenstown Lakes - $450,000

  • All other areas - $350,000

First Home Withdrawal

The First Home Withdrawal rules are as follows:

·         Member Tax Credits can now be withdrawn

    • Eligible first home buyers can now withdraw their Member Tax Credits (MTCs), along with any employer, employee and voluntary contributions and investment earnings.

    • The $1,000 kick-start and transfers from Australian complying superannuation schemes are still excluded.

    • Members can only claim the amounts that are currently in their KiwiSaver account. They won’t be able to claim any MTCs earned during the current MTC year – i.e. partial claims won’t be possible.

    • If a member does not withdraw their full entitlement, scheme providers will release employer, employee and voluntary contributions and investment earnings first, and Member Tax Credits second.
